Ever seen pictures of ringworm? They look like circles on your skin and are inflamed and cause itchiness. They can also be found on your nails and they look yellow and in some cases your nails would fall off. Don’t be too concerned however, despite the name, ringworm is a type of fungi growing on your skin that feeds on the layers outside your skin, hair and nails which is called keratin. It is estimated to affect at least twenty percent of the population at any given time, mostly in adults. Since the fungi thrive in moist warm places, you can get them anywhere, especially public places like locker rooms or swimming pools and most especially in the folds of your skin. Another carrier tends to be animals like cats or dogs that have their hair falling out. This tends to be the effect of ringworm and touching them will carry it over to you so be careful. There are various ways to prevent the transmission of ringworm: avoid the borrowing and using of personal clothing especially towels which serves as a breeding ground for the fungi, don’t run barefoot as you can attract ringworm that way, if you suspect ringworm on you wash with anti-bacterial or anti-fungal soap and as said before you should never touch the bald spot of a cat or dog as it indicates ringworm.
